 our rather than gradients or patterns.\nIt originated in the art world\, p
 articularly inspired by the work of painters like Piet Mondrian in the ear
 ly 20th century\, and became a major fashion trend in the 1960s. It has cy
 cled in and out of popularity ever since.\nIn fashion\, it typically means
  wearing two or more strongly contrasting solid colours together — for e
 xample\, a cobalt blue top with bright orange trousers. The key is that ea
 ch colour occupies its own defined area\, creating a graphic\, almost geom
 etric effect.\nThe principle also applies in interior design\, graphic des
 ign\, and branding\, where large areas of flat\, bold colour are used to c
