How do you use social media to promote your photography?

I always think of Twitter as useful to keep up with news and with discussions. However, I set up a photography stream and I am really surprised at how much Twitter is being used to promote photography. How do you use Twitter (or other social media) to promote your photography? If you upload photos, how do you protect them (some sites have policies that uploading the photos means others can use them as they like).
