How do you plan road-trips?

Planning a road-trip is very different from other route-planning. Setting stops and breaks, deviation from the initially planned way etc.
If, which tools are you using for this, which on- or offline maps and other software are helpful for you?

A good starting point is marking down on a map the must-sees in the area of travel. Then it’s easy to create a tentative route and reserve necessary sleeping places on the way (depending on the travel style). I would also advice NOT to make a too tight schedule so that there is a possibility to visit unexpected things on the way and truly enjoy the time on the road.

There is an interesting planning tool around: https://trips.furkot.com/
After entering some points of your route (like start / end), basic information (average speed, drive-time per day) and planned stops, it calculates the route and generates proposals for overnight stays.
